KENIC was formed in 2003 as a non-profit organization through a private public partnership the idea being hatched by the local internet community. Following intense debates the .KE was re- delegated to kenic by ICCAN, who had originally delegated the domain in 1993 to Dr. Ochuodho and Randy Bush (USA). The goal was to promote the uptake of the internet sub-sect ICT in Kenya. Kenic is the central registry of the dot KE, which is Kenya’s country top level domain.
Kenic operates 3R domain management, Registry/Registrars/Registrants. It however does not directly register domain from the general public.Kenic accredits companies such as skyhost to become its registrars who then register members of the public on its behalf.
Kenics vision is to promote the uptake of the .KE domain for every individual and organization by 2030.Since ccTLDs are a national public resource kenics mandate is to manage .KE domain in a manner that safeguards the general public interest.
KENIC Functions include
· Act as a trustee for the .ke country-code-top-level-domain;
· Become the .ke domain administrative contact as well as technical contact;
· Administer the .ke ccTLD and its Second Level Domains;
· Maintain and promote the operational stability and utility of the .ke ccTLD;
· Ensure a cost-effective administration of the .ke ccTLD and its sub-domains;
Kenics responsibility to ICCAN
· Update ICANN of any changes made to the contact information about the.ke ccTLD;
· Provide name service for all .ke and ensure that the database is secure and stable;
· Allow ICANN to access .ke zone files and registration data (up to date) continuously maintain a KENIC website at all times with all the registration information meet all its financial obligations to ICANN comply with all global ICANN Internet policies and help in their development.
